Sonic the Hedgehog is a platform video game that was released in 1991 for the Sega Master System and the Game Gear. It is distinct from the more popular 16-bit game. In addition to its original release as a cartridge, the game was later built into some versions of the Sega Master System II in Europe. In 2007 it was re-released for Xbox Live Arcade. Gameplay

In each act, the player must survive enemies and obstacles while progressing through the stage to accomplish a goal within the time limit. In the first two acts, the goal is to cross a Bonus Plate at the end, a signboard which then spins on its post to reveal a possible random bonus such as extra rings, lives, or access to a Special Stage. The game features the same general mechanics as the Mega Drive game, in which Sonic can run at high speeds, and roll or somersault into things to damage them with his spines. Throughout the game Sonic can collect rings, which protect him in the event of a contact-based injury. Boss levels have no rings, requiring the player to traverse them without being hit. The player has a number of lives with which to complete the game. If all lives are lost, the game ends.

 

Though three of the six zones are adapted from the Mega Drive game (Green Hill Zone, Labyrinth Zone, Scrap Brain Zone) with different level designs, the others are based on original themes (Bridge Zone, Jungle Zone, Sky Base Zone). The more limited capabilities of the 8-bit Master System and Game Gear compared to the 16-bit Mega Drive influenced the design changes, which include a reduced speed and an absence of loops. In each zone, a Chaos Emerald is hidden in one of the first two acts, as opposed to being in the center of Special Stages as in the Mega Drive game.

 

In contrast to the Mega Drive game, the end game credits are missing in this game. A prototype of this game was featured on the popular Nickelodeon game show Nick Arcade.

 

Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 that was made to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. It was developed by Sonic Team, published by Sega and directed by Shun Nakamura.

 

The game shares its name with two earlier video games, a manga, a television series, a comic book series and their eponymous main character. To disambiguate, the game has been called by a number of different aliases, including, but not limited to, Sonic 06, Sonic 2K6, Sonic 360, and Sonic Next Gen.

 

It was released on November 14, 2006

Princess Elise is the beloved ruler of the peaceful city of Soleanna. During the Festival of the Sun, the city is attacked by Doctor Eggman who is seeking the secret to a powerful weapon, the "Flames of Disaster," that will help him take over the world, which Elise possesses. However, Sonic arrives and helps Elise escape, though Eggman quickly tracks him down, sends more robots to attack them, and successfully captures Elise while Sonic is preoccupied. Before being taken away, Elise gives Sonic her Chaos Emerald.

 

The next morning, Sonic meets up with Tails and sets out to find Elise. Before long, Sonic manages to rescue her, and Tails splits up with Sonic to divert the attention of Eggman's robots. Noticing Sonic got hurt, she blames herself for it. Sonic tells her to smile and that her smile is all he needs. Elise then explains to Sonic that the Flames of Disaster Eggman hopes to unleash is the fury of Solaris, a sun god her people worship, and that she holds the secret to this power.

 

Upon returning to Soleanna, Sonic is attacked by a telekinetic hedgehog named Silver, who calls him the "Iblis Trigger" and tries to kill him, saying that it will protect the future. While Sonic and Silver fight, Elise is once again kidnapped by Eggman. Amy arrives out of nowhere and prevents Silver from finishing off Sonic, allowing Sonic to chase after Elise, thanking her briefly. Sonic reunites with Tails and finds Knuckles at the Warehouse of New City with a message from Eggman, and the three head over to Eggman's base in White Acropolis, where Elise is being held. There Sonic agrees to give him his Chaos Emerald in exchange for Elise but, unsurprisingly, Eggman goes back on his promise and traps the trio in a time machine, which thrusts them into a distant, post-apocalyptic future.

 

Sonic, Tails and Knuckles encounter Shadow and Rouge, who are also trapped in this future. In order to return to the present, they need to create a rift in time and space, which they figure can be created if Sonic and Shadow use their Chaos Control together. While searching for Chaos Emeralds, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles encounter Silver, his friend Blaze, and Mephiles, a dark being who resembles Shadow, tells Silver that Sonic is the one responsible for the future's devastation, and takes them back in time to kill Sonic. Sonic learns from a computer file that Elise was killed when Eggman's battleship exploded two days after she was kidnapped. After retrieving a pair of Chaos Emeralds, Sonic and Shadow create the space-time rift, allowing them to return to the present.

 

Sonic returns for Elise, but is once again attacked by Silver, also allowing Eggman to kidnap Elise again. Fortunately, Shadow arrives to confront Silver, allowing Sonic to rescue Elise.

 

After running through the jungle, Sonic tells Elise she should return to the castle. Elise agrees to do so, but shows sadness over this. Noticing her sadness, Sonic takes her to a lake. Elise is captivated by the scenery. She then asks Sonic that once he defeats Eggman, will he leave the city, to which Sonic nods. She tells him that she enjoyed experiencing the adventure, and requests to him that when he leaves the city, that he remember it. Sonic promises her that he will. Elise suddenly turns away from Sonic, fighting back tears. She tells herself that she must not cry and swiftly turns back to Sonic, hugging him. As Sonic returns her hug, he once again gently tells her to smile. Elise regains her composure and nods.

 

Later, Eggman arrives in his battleship and threatens to destroy Soleanna, and Elise willingly surrenders herself to him to protect her people. Eggman explains to Elise that in order for his plan to take over the world to work, he requires the seven Chaos Emeralds and the dormant power of the Flames of Disaster within Elise to awaken Solaris, allowing him to harness the sun god's power over time.

 

On his way to rescue Elise, Sonic encounters Silver once more, but instead of attacking Sonic, expresses concern for Elise as well. The two hedgehogs team up, but before they reach the battleship, it malfunctions, crashes and explodes, just as Sonic feared. However, Sonic and Silver realize they can use Chaos Control to travel back in time to the previous day, before Eggman's battleship launched. Sonic travels to the past alone and reunites with Elise. Shadow's story begins two years after the events of Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow infiltrates Dr. Eggman's base on a mission to find Rouge, who was sent to retrieve an artifact called the Scepter of Darkness. Upon finding and escaping with her, they are attacked by Eggman. During the attack, the Scepter of Darkness is shattered, releasing a being of darkness which absorbs Shadow's shadow and takes on his form. This being, Mephiles, appears to be familiar with Shadow, though Shadow has no memory of him. Mephiles proceeds to fling Shadow and Rouge to a devastated future.

 

Shadow and Rouge encounter Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, who were sent there by Eggman. In order to return to the present, they need to create a rift in time and space, which they figure can be created if Sonic and Shadow use their Chaos Control together. While searching for Chaos Emeralds, Shadow and Rouge encounter Omega, who is on standby mode. After retrieving a pair of Chaos Emeralds, Sonic and Shadow create the space-time rift, allowing them to return to the present; however, Shadow spots Mephiles and remains in the future to confront him. In the present, Rouge finds Omega and gives him a Chaos Emerald, telling him to wait in time and assist Shadow. Back in the future, Shadow is told by Mephiles that humanity will use Shadow as a scapegoat for Iblis's misdeeds and imprison him, but he refuses to join Mephiles, who turns into a new, crystalline version of Shadow. With the help of Omega, Shadow defeats Mephiles, returning to the present when he flees to Soleanna. Shadow goes off to find Eggman to learn more about Mephiles, while Rouge and Omega track down Mephiles themselves.

 

Shadow finds Sonic being attacked by Silver and saves him, engaging Silver in combat. Shadow overpowers Silver with his use of Chaos Control, but Silver, in an attempt to strike back, takes out his Chaos Emerald and utilizes Chaos Control at the same time as Shadow, creating a time-space rift. In order to find answers to their respective questions, Shadow and Silver enter the rift and find themselves ten years in the past when the failure of the Solaris Project, an event known in the present to have caused great devastation, occurred. They arrive during an explosion that injures or kills all within its radius and releases Mephiles and a fiery being, Iblis, revealed to be two separate forms of the god Solaris. Armed with the Scepter of Darkness by the wounded King of Soleanna (Elise's father), Shadow chases after Mephiles and seals him within the Scepter. Having done what they needed to do, Shadow and Silver return to the present (leaving the Scepter of Darkness with Mephiles sealed in it behind).

 

Shadow reunites with Rouge and Omega, who have learned from Mephiles that Omega will be the one who captures Shadow in the future; however, Rouge comforts Shadow with the notion that she will always remain loyal to him. With a new Scepter of Darkness, Shadow, Rouge and Omega confront Mephiles and attempt to seal him away once more, but his new form prevents them from doing so. Using the power of the Chaos Emeralds, Mephiles clones himself into an army and reminds Shadow of humanity's betrayal in an effort to sway him to his side. Undeterred and unconvinced, Shadow takes the rings off his gloves, and unleashes all the energy from within himself and begins his assault on Mephiles' army of clones with Rouge and Omega by his side. Silver and his friend, Blaze The Cat, live 200 years in a devastated future, their time period destroyed by an immortal creature called Iblis, the Flames of Disaster. Despairing over the fact that they have no way to truly defeat Iblis, Silver and Blaze encounter a mysterious being named Mephiles, who claims that he can stop the Flames of Disaster by destroying the "Iblis Trigger," a being who will unleash Iblis. Mephiles points out the Iblis Trigger to be none other than Sonic, and he sends Silver and Blaze to Sonic's time period.

 

Upon reaching the past, Silver and Blaze are separated. While searching for Sonic, Silver meets Amy Rose, who is also looking for Sonic. Silver and Amy help each other in their search for Sonic, though they are both unaware they are seeking out the same person, as well as what they plan to do with him. Upon finding Sonic, Silver attacks him, only to be stopped by Amy. Seeing how much Amy cares for Sonic makes Silver question his motives but, upon reuniting with Blaze, strengthens his resolve.

 

Infiltrating the base of Dr. Eggman, Silver recovers a Chaos Emerald and keeps it for himself. Silver encounters Sonic again, only to be stopped and attacked by Shadow. Shadow overpowers Silver with his use of Chaos Control, but Silver, in an attempt to strike back, takes out his Chaos Emerald and utilizes Chaos Control at the same time as Shadow, creating a rift in time and space. Silver chases after Iblis, who is sealed away by the King of Soleanna into the body of his daughter, Princess Elise, with a Chaos Emerald. Before he succumbs to his injuries from the explosion, the King tells his unconscious daughter to never cry, as it would unleash Iblis. Silver then realizes that Mephiles has tricked him and that Elise is the "Iblis Trigger". Before returning to the present with Shadow, Silver gives his Chaos Emerald to Elise.

 

Realizing that Sonic isn't the Iblis Trigger, Silver is informed by Blaze that Princess Elise has surrendered to Eggman and was taken away on his battleship. Silver and Blaze fear that Eggman plans to release Iblis. On his way to rescue Elise, Silver encounters Sonic and teams up with him. Before they can reach Eggman's battleship, it crashes and explodes due to a system malfunction. Silver and Sonic use Chaos Control to travel back to before when Eggman's ship launched. Sonic travels to the past alone to save Elise from her grim fate, but not before giving Silver a Chaos Emerald.

 

Silver and Blaze return to their timeline in an effort to stop Iblis, now knowing they don't have to alter the past to save the future. Finally defeating Iblis, Silver attempts to seal the Flames of Disaster away into his soul, but he is rejected. When Sonic and Elise return to the city, Mephiles appears out of nowhere, blinds them with the power of the purple Chaos Emerald, and projects an energy spear that impales Sonic through the back, killing him almost instantly. Elise cries in despair, releasing Iblis from within her. Shadow, Rouge and Omega have defeated Mephiles' clones but have forgotten about the real Mephiles. They see a Chaos Emerald on the floor which Shadow tries to take but it flashes and blinds their eyes. Using the power of his and the other six Chaos Emeralds (scattered around elsewhere), Mephiles absorbs Iblis and mutates into one single being, Solaris the Timereaver, the sun god worshipped by the residents of Soleanna, and creates a distorted world to destroy time itself. Elise, Shadow, Silver, Tails, Knuckles, Rouge, Omega, Amy, Eggman, and Sonic's body are caught in the space-time rift and gathered together.

 

After everyone mourns Sonic's death, Eggman reveals that Solaris is about to bring about the end of the world by destroying time itself. Everyone resolves to defeat Solaris, but Eggman informs them that Solaris exists in all timelines, and thus defeating it in the present time would do nothing. Refusing to give up, Silver suggests that they attack and destroy Solaris all at once, but Shadow deems such a fate impossible with Sonic dead. However, Elise feels Sonic's presence, and Silver deduces that they can revive Sonic with the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds scattered all around the distorted world of time.

 

As reality itself falls apart around them, Sonic's friends venture across the distorted worlds and gather the seven Chaos Emeralds scattered throughout by Solaris. Using their power, along with her kiss, Elise brings Sonic back to life in the form of Super Sonic. He transfers his power to Shadow and Silver, turning them into their super forms as well, and together the three hedgehogs fight Solaris and successfully defeat him, causing Solaris to be ripped apart and flung through space and time itself. Afterwards, Sonic and Elise travel back in time to the birth of the Flames of Disaster, realizing that if they put them out, Solaris will be erased from history, though they will never meet each other as a result. In despair, Elise begins to cry and shouts that she doesn't care what happens to the world as long as she and Sonic are together; though Sonic is clearly less-than-happy about this result as well, he knows what has to be done, and tells her to just smile, convincing her to blow out the flame.

 

Afterwards, time reboots back to the Festival of the Sun, though Eggman does not attack this time; all of the events that transpired beforehand, in effect, never happened. However, during the parade, Elise feels a familiar blue wind pass by her, and smiles. The scene cuts to Sonic on a rooftop, watching her and smiling. Both events indicate that Sonic and Elise have a recollection of the game's events to some extent. It is also believed that, because Solaris (and it's products, Mephalies and Iblis) was destroyed, Blaze was never sealed in an alternate dimension. This game features the cast of 4Kids Entertainment from Sonic X in the English version. The Japanese version has mostly the same voice actors from the previous games. In addition, Lacey Chabert, who is coincidentally a long-time Sonic fan, voices Princess Elise, marking the first time in the franchise that Hollywood talent has provided voice-over work for a Sonic game.

Each story mode has the player control either Sonic, Silver or Shadow. Sonic's levels generally focus on speed, with some sections having him run at full speed whilst dodging obstacles. Other segments see him escorting Princess Elise, who uses a barrier to protect him from certain hazards. Shadow's sections are similarly speedy albeit more combat focused, though some segments see him riding vechiles, such as a jeep. In contrast, Silver's levels move at a slower pace, and revolve around his use of telekinesis to defeat enemies and solve puzzles. In certain areas, control is switched to an amigo character (Tails and Knuckles for Sonic, Rouge and Omega for Shadow, and Amy and Blaze for Silver), each with their own abilities. Although each character plays the same levels, each character's unique abilities allow him or her to get to different areas of each stage, and deny them from accessing certain items.

 

Action Stages are where the bulk of the gameplay takes place, whereas Town Stages are free-roaming locations where the player can talk to non-player characters and explore, as in Sonic Adventure's Adventure Fields. For each of the action stages in the respective stories, gold medals are obtainable by achieving high ranks in these stages.

 

There are a total of eleven stages. A ranking system exists for each of the levels and town missions, providing ranks calculated from score, rings and time remaining. The highest rank is S Rank, followed by A Rank, down to the lowest, D.

 

Several downloadable extensions have been released that add features to single-player gameplay. These include 'Very Hard' mode, a more difficult version of the game; 'Boss Attack' modes, which allow a playable character to engage in continuous battles with all of the game's bosses; and 'Team Attack Amigo' mode, which allows players to play through the entirety of the game as amigo characters. Sonic the Hedgehog features two styles of multiplayer game play that offer two player action.

 

The first mode, Tag Mode, is a co-op type of play between Sonic, Silver and Shadow. Two players, each one controlling a character, must work together to clear levels and collect Chaos Emeralds. In this mode, lives are shared. The second game style available is Battle Mode. Battle mode pits two players against each other and has them race to a goal in the selected level.

 

The previously rumored mini-games that were to allow up to four players to play simultaneously/alternately (Quiz, Race and a few others) seem to be missing in the final release of the game. The main theme for the game is entitled His World, performed by Ali Tabatabaee (Iranian rapper/vocalist) and Matty Lewis (American guitarist/vocalist) both of the band Zebrahead. Crush 40 also performed a different version of His World with member of the band Johnny Gioeli as vocalist.

 

HipHop/R&B Artist Akon has done a remix to Dreams Come True song "Sweet Sweet Sweet," a song from the album The Swinging Star. This track was originally composed by Masato Nakamura, and sung by DCT's Miwa Yoshida. Shadow's theme, "All Hail Shadow," one of the vocal songs from the Shadow the Hedgehog soundtrack, was rearranged by Crush 40; it was originally sung by the band Magna-Fi.

 

Silver's theme, "Dreams of an Absolution," by Lee Brotherton (from the Remix Factory, AKA Bentley Jones) was written by Mariko Nanba and Brotherton. As Bentley Jones, Brotherton performed a special version of this song with Richard Jacques live at the Summer of Sonic convention in August 2008 called Dreams of an Absolution ~Ballad Version~. Reception Gameplay and Technical Problems

 

Sonic the Hedgehog has been widely panned by critics. Across thirty-nine reviews, Game Rankings recorded the average score as 46%: the second poorest average for an Xbox 360 title at the time of the game's release. best things of Sonic and Mario can be found on Softendo-Games Sites like IGN admitted that "it offers a few good ideas, and a handful of exciting moments, but none of this helps the game recover from a catastrophic loss in control." Dave Halverson of Play Magazine is notable for initially giving the game its biggest praise; a score of 9.5 for the Xbox 360 version. This was dropped down to 8.5 in the next issue, with Halverson explaining how he was incorrectly told that the load times and glitches in his review copy would not be in the finished product. In a February 2007 interview for Kikizo magazine, Sonic Team producer Yojiro Ogawa was asked to comment on the game's glitches, control problems and loading times: “ The reason why we probably ended up with what we see today, involves a lot of reasons. One is that we did want to launch the title around Christmas, and we had the PS3 launch coming up, but we had to develop for Microsoft's 360 at the same time and the team had an awful lot of pressure on them. It was very hard for the team to try and see how we were going to come out with both versions together with just the one team. It was a big challenge. ”

The game's plot was also widely criticized. Characters like Tails, Amy and Knuckles or Blaze were criticized for serving little to no impact on the story's progression, as well as a lack of character development.[citation needed] GameSpot stated that "While the character variety might initially seem like a good idea, most of them aren't too interesting," Chech the Buziol.pl GameTrailers commented that "even if you like the characters, the convoluted manimal melodrama is poor quality," while Eurogamer mentioned that "Rather than fleshing the game out, the supporting cast often just annoys."[17]

 

The implied romance between Sonic (an animal) and Elise (a human) has also been heavily criticized. GamesRadar called their kiss "the most bizarrely cringe-worthy kiss in video game history," Check the Softendo Portal and in another article, concluded about the pairing that "True love has never been so disgusting." Check the Softendo Portal On October 2006, a month before the game's release, Lacey Chabert, the voice actress of Princess Elise was asked in an interview with GameSpy if anyone would "attack the game for promoting bestiality," to which she gave the following response:

 

Sonic the Hedgehog is an ongoing series of American comic books published by Archie Comics, featuring Sega's mascot video game character of the same name. The comic book series debuted in the United States at the beginning of 1993, two years after the release of the first video game in 1991 for the Sega Genesis. Spin-off publications from the comic include a Knuckles the Echidna series starring the titular character, which ran for 32 issues; 15 48-page "Super Specials"; 8 single 48-page special issues; and 4 short three-issue miniseries, each starring a character from the series. On September 21, 2005, Archie Comics started a new series based on the TV show Sonic X. In February 2009, the Sonic X series was replaced by Sonic Universe, a direct spin-off of the parent comic, Sonic the Hedgehog.

 

Aside from the Sonic X series, all of Archie Comics' Sonic-related series take place in the same fictional universe (Sonic X take place in an different dimension from the main series, although crossovers between the two have occurred). This universe features a mixture of characters, settings and storylines from the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon, the Sonic video games by Sega, and various other incarnations of Sonic. It also includes many elements unique to the comic universe. While the ongoing game series keep influencing the comic series, the games and the comics exist as entirely different continuities. Sonic the Hedgehog is not to be confused with Sonic the Comic, which ran in the UK and published more issues despite running for a shorter time (due to UK comics being published on more frequent schedule than in the US). As of January 2010, there have been 208 issues of the original Sonic the Hedgehog series. Overview

 

The main focus of the comic storyline is the title character, world-famous hero Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic is endowed with super speed and a love of freedom, which puts him at odds with the nefarious Dr. Robotnik. Sonic is in many ways different from his game counterpart - in the comics, he is depicted as having important ties with his family and friends, a characteristic absent from other incarnations. He is also portrayed as having a deep sense of duty - in the games Sonic treats his ongoing conflict with Eggman as just an opportunity to have a fun time, whereas in the comic he holds a personal grudge against the Doctor and understands his ability to protect the world from this menace. Sometimes he does seem to have a fun time fighting Robotnik, but ultimately he seems to treat the ordeal seriously.

 

Although Sonic normally goes adventuring by himself in the video games (with the occasional company of other player characters), in the comic he is affiliated with the Freedom Fighters, a ragtag rebellion that was formed to counter the tyranny of Dr. Ivo Robotnik (currently known as "Eggman") and his legion of unquestioning, warlike robots. The basis of the original issues were designed to closely mirror the animated television series, as well as the names and likenesses of Sonic's allies in the Freedom Fighters. At the beginning of the series the year was 3235, though by now it is approximately 3237 (The year 3237 was shown on Eggman's computer screen in issue #157). Sonic currently lives on Planet Mobius in New Mobotropolis. It was eventually revealed that Mobius is actually a future Earth (in an alternate reality), the year being 14,016 A.D. by the real-life calendar.

 

Originally, the date of the Xorda attack was said to have been three millennia ago (sometime during the 21st century by our calendar), which was likely what caused the year to reset at 0. However, the date of the Xorda attack was retconned to have occurred roughly twelve thousand years ago from the current Mobian year. This was explained in issues #124, #125 and #148.

 

At the onset of the series, Sonic's original home was Knothole Village, a secret metal base hidden within the Great Forest. Other main areas of setting include Angel Island, Station Square, Downunda and New Megaopolis.

 

Storyline summary

 

The original issues of the series and those soon to follow consisted mostly of isolated stories. That is, there was rarely any continuity between issues. However, there were the additions of new characters (such as Bunnie Rabbot, Knuckles, and Super Sonic) that would become familiar and lasting faces as the series continued. The early issues featured much of Sonic versus Robotnik, in which Sonic would constantly foil Robotnik’s plans whether it be to tear down a forest or find the hidden location of Knothole Village. Eventually though, the issues started to gain a sense of an ongoing story, most notably with the addition of the Mecha Sonic storyline in issue #39, in which Sonic is transformed into a robotic form and does as Robotnik commands. This would later be concluded in a Sonic Special issue where Knuckles gives himself up to be transformed into a robot in order to defeat Mecha Sonic. From here, the storyline would be further developed into what is now a fully continuous one. Following the defeat of Mecha Sonic, the Freedom Fighters come together in issue #46 to discuss ways to attack and defeat Robotnik once and for all. The loyalty of many of the Freedom Fighters comes into question, particularly notable in a feud between Sonic and Geoffrey St. John, member of the Acorn Secret Service. This continues into the renowned EndGame saga which takes place over a four issue span, #47 through #50.

 

The saga begins with a mission by the Freedom Fighters and the Wolf Pack, led by Lupe, to attack Robotnik’s base. Princess Sally reveals thoughts of her father, King Acorn, telling her that it would soon become apparent that Sonic is a traitor. The mission proceeds and Sally is in need of help or she may fall to her death. The Freedom Fighters look on in despair when they think they see Sonic and assume that he will rescue the princess. Much to their surprise, Sonic aids Sally in falling to her death. The mission is called to retreat, and the Freedom Fighters move back to Knothole Village. Meanwhile, Sonic is seen battling Robotnik inside the base (when he apparently left Sally for dead). Robotnik escapes and Sonic leaves the base, wondering where the rest of his companions have gone. Sonic returns to Knothole, only to be arrested and spared the death penalty in light of all his services, so instead he is sentenced to life in prison on the Devil’s Gulag, where other notorious traitors such as Sleuth Doggy Dog (issue #42) will be imprisoned with him. While Sonic is being transported to the Gulag, Swatbots attack the vessel and it crash lands. Sonic remains conscious and takes the opportunity to escape. News bears word and King Acorn demands the recapture of Sonic by St. John. Sonic on the run, takes refuge in a cavern. Meanwhile, Bunnie and Antoine discover that Drago (a member of the Wolf Pack) has been working with Robotnik in order to frame Sonic. This is followed by King Acorn issuing Robotnik as his new Warlord. Sonic, in the meantime, continues his run from St. John and the secret service with aid from Dulcy the Dragon. Robotnik reveals his duplicate of the king by making it self destruct and the true plan has become evident to all. All this would lead up to Sonic's return to Knothole in issue #50, where Sonic clears his name heads to a final showdown with Robotnik. As the issue notes, Sonic is uncharacteristically devoid of humor as he approaches Robotnik, even going so far as to address him as "Julian". In the battle, Robotnik’s Ultimate Annihilator crashes and the room is destined for destruction, but Robotnik and Sonic remain to fight. In the end, Sonic emerges victorious and Robotnik is wiped out. Sonic later revives Sally with a kiss.

 

Storylines continue to follow after the EndGame saga. Ixis Naugus makes his first appearance in issue #53. Although temporarily defeated, he would later return in issues #64 through #66, along with the appearance of Nate Morgan, former advisor of King Acorn, and Ixis would be defeated this time by Ultra Sonic, one of Sonic's transformations.

 

Issue #75 reveals that a robotic version of Robotnik has been functioning since after the defeat of the original Robotnik in issue #50. His presence is revealed by flashbacks to certain issues between issues #50 and #75. Sonic and the Freedom Fighters head to space to battle this Robo-Robotnik, and although they defeat him, they only destroyed his robot body. It is then revealed that he had many back-up bodies on standby with which to download himself into. These new bodies are what has now become Sonic's familiar enemy, Eggman (until being transformed back into an organic lifeform by the Bem in issue #116).

 

Sonic Adventure is readily adapted into the series with the appearance of Chaos, beginning in issue #79. The saga ends with Sonic successfully defeating Perfect Chaos, the final form of Chaos after absorbing all of the Chaos Emeralds, by transforming into Super Sonic in issue #84. Sonic does not actually destroy Chaos, as Chaos returns to his ancient beginnings to live in peace.

 

Issues #85 and #86 feature the return of Metal Sonic.

 

Sonic Adventure 2 comes into adaptation for one issue featuring Shadow the Hedgehog.

 

In issue #125, Sonic's latest battle leaves him stranded in space after saving Knothole. On Mobius, he is assumed to be dead. Sonic's journey through space leads up to many interesting story lines, such as the return of Super Sonic in issue #126, and Sonic's discovery that Tails' parents are still alive on a far off planet. Sonic returns in issue #130 where he reveals to everyone that he is indeed alive and well.

 

Issues #131 through #144 introduce a sub storyline in which the future of Mobius is the plot. In this future, Sonic is king of Knothole and married to Sally. Knuckles has attained the rank of Guardian and is partnered (not married) to Julie-Su. However all is not well as the timeline is in danger of collapsing into destruction. Sonic and Knuckles try with the help of Rotor to prevent this catastrophe, but fail and the time line and storyline come to an end.

 

Issue #145 features the return of Shadow, who then returns to take part of the storyline, frequently battling Sonic in issues #157 through #161.

 

Sonic was switched with Anti-Sonic (an evil version of himself from a parallel universe) temporarily and got back to find Anti-Sonic ruining his reputation around Knothole by making romantic advances toward his female friends. Sally was about to marry Patch (the evil version of Antoine from the same parallel universe, masquerading as his doppelganger), whose plan was to kill King Acorn upon the end of the ceremony, effectively making him king of the Acorn Kingdom. Before Patch's plan could go into motion, Sonic successfully convinced Prince Elias to come back and accept the crown so Sally wouldn't have to be married off. Sonic defeated Patch, sent him back to Anti-Mobius, and rescued the real Antoine. Realizing that it would take a long time before he and Sally could have a healthy relationship, Sonic began dating Fiona Fox.

 

Issues #160 and #161 feature the creation of Scourge the Hedgehog, Anti-Sonic's green form that resulted from his mutation via the Master Emerald. It is later revealed that Fiona's loyalty belonged to Scourge rather than Sonic, and she subsequently left the Freedom Fighters to be with him, and later return with the other "anti-freedom fighters".

In issue #175-#177 The Freedom Fighters are enjoying respite at the original base when Snively catches them off guard in a mech and vaporizes all the Freedom Fighters except Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Sonic then escapes in the top portion of his robot, the body smashes to pieces by an enraged Mighty. Sonic races off to save everyone else in Knothole while Knuckles, Tails, and Amy are trapped in the ruins of the base. Sonic finds Knothole in ruins as the Egg Fleet burns it too the ground. Sonic, in panic, rushes to the still-standing Castle Acorn to save Elias and the castles inhabitants, when Eggman, in a new battle armor, destroys the castle before Sonic's eyes. Eggman reveals that Snively did not kill Sonic's friends, but teleported them too Eggman's Egg Grapes to convert their life-force into energy to power his Eggman Empire. Eggman and Sonic battle but Eggman easily defeats Sonic; his armor outclassing Sonic in strength and speed. As a last ditch effort, Sonic runs as fast as he ever has, crossing the country in only a few seconds.He rushes at Eggman as fast as he can, slamming into Eggman's shield and throwing him into a pile of rubble. Eggman emerges with no damage but a badly dented shield. Eggman leaves Sonic broken and defeated and returns to his Egg Grapes. Sonic returns to his friends and they discover Nicole the supercomputer has survived the attack with a plan to defeat Eggman. Sonic and his friends race to the Egg Vineyard just as Eggman is preparing to activate the Egg Grape containing Charmy the Bee. Sonic and co. break all the citizens of Knothole out of the Egg Grapes and Nicole reprograms Eggmans computer as Eggman and Snively run to their armor. As all the would-be escapees flee the Egg Vineyard, Eggman tries to teleport everyone into his reserve Egg Grapes, but the reprogramed armor, instead, sends them all to New Mobotropolis, a city created entirely out of Nanites by Nicole.

 

In Issues #198 and #199, the Freedom Fighters and Chaotix proceed to storm Eggman's base. In the process, the team separates and fight against the Dark Legion. Near the end of issue #199, a blocked doorway with a small hole, indicating that Sonic was to Spin-Dash through is discovered. Eggman, who is inside a spider robot, faces off with Sonic. In #200, Sonic once again beats Eggman, who, unexpectedly, goes insane, taking off his eyeglasses and tearing off his mustache. The next issue, Sonic is filled with a dread and remorse, but is cheered up by Sally in order to enjoy the celebration of finally defeating Eggman. However, the party is crashed when Khan appears in a rage. Sonic attacks without hesitation as he is bored, only to find out that the Egg Empire had a new ruler. The two proceed to destroy the new empire. In a sub story, Espio is seen running off to the empire with a "brother ninja" while on clan business.

 

Sonic and Khan attack the empire, to find the Dark Legion, but also encounter the ninja clans. Espio also appears and attacks Sonic and an apology. Sonic and Khan return to New Mobius beaten and defeated. In issue #203, Snively and the Iron Queen attack Mobius, and the freedom fighters attack, however, the iron Queen uses her ability to control Cybernetics to control Bunnie's body. and forcing her to attack her comrades. Over time, however, she grows weak due to the strain on her life force. Khan appears and saves Bunnie, and fights the duo. Sonic runs off to place Bunnie in the hospital. However, Khan's power ring is destroyed and he is taken over by the Iron Queen. Sonic, who returns to find Khan being controlled, is reluctant to fight, so instead he goes and retrieves a ring. When Khan flies in to attack Sonic, he jams the power ring on Khan's head releasing the control and freeing Khan, who apologizes for his recklessness. In the following sub-story, Eggman, who is seemingly insane says the over-ride code thus opening his cell.

Sonic the Hedgehog was originally published as a four issue mini-series, with the first issue labeled as "issue 0" and the second as "issue 1" (despite the note on issue 1 that it was the "first issue"). At the end of issue 3 (the fourth issue of the series), it was announced that Sonic would return in a regular series, and the next issue was published as "issue 1" of the regular series.

 

In addition to the main Sonic series, Archie Comics published various special issues. Longer than typical issues of the comic, these specials feature stories involving Sonic and other related characters. Several miniseries have also been published, featuring characters such as Sally, Tails and Knuckles.

 

Because of the popularity of the specials and Miniseries featuring Knuckles, in 1997 Knuckles the Echidna became an ongoing series. Knuckles's stories featured its own cast of Characters, including the Chaotix. Like the Sonic comic, Knuckles's comic is filled with background information about Knuckles's family history. Knuckles's family has split into two factions: the Brotherhood of Guardians and the Dark Legion. Knuckles is a member of the former, and Julie-Su used to be a member of the latter. Much of the conflict of the comic surrounds the relations between these two warring factions.

 

In 1999, the series was canceled, but the stories were continued in the pages of Sonic the Hedgehog. After Knuckles's cancellation and until issue 125, a typical issue of Sonic included a Sonic story and a Knuckles story, sometimes even including a third story. This led to each story getting considerably less space than it previously had. Recently, Knuckles's appearances have been infrequent but his story continues within Sonic's stories.

 

The creators also have a comic strip similar to those found in a newspaper at the end of some issues called Off-Panel. Off-Panel was in every issue for a long time and continues in the spinoff series Sonic Universe. Sonic the Hedgehog occasionally features homages to other mainstream or third-party comic books. The most prominent among these include:

 

* The Bunnie-Antoine relationship slightly mirrors that of Rogue and Gambit, one of the better-known couples from X-Men; Bunnie is famous for calling people "Hon" or "Sugah" (like Rogue), and Antoine often peppers his dialog with French phrases (similar to Gambit).

 

* A multiverse exists in Sonic's world that allows for travel to parallel universes, similar to the DC multiverse or the Marvel multiverse. Sonic and other characters navigate the dimensions using a literal superhighway called the Cosmic Interstate.

 

* Certain 48-page specials of Sonic have been devoted to thinly-veiled spoofs or crossovers with different comic publications. The Sonic Super Special "Parallel Paradigm" features a mass crossover with Savage Dragon, Shadowhawk, The Maxx, and other characters from Image Comics as they work together to battle a villain called "The Doctor" who has stolen Knuckles' Master Emerald and taken it back in time to the present 1990s. Some believe that The Doctor is actually another version or the original Doctor Robotnik, since The Doctor hints it throughout the adventure. Other heroes make small "shadowy" cameos in the comic as well. Those include Batman, Spider-Man, and Popeye who seem to be prisoners of The Doctor as he plans to transform Earth into a new Robotropolis which just continues to hint towards him being Robotnik.

 

* Issues #103-105 chronicles Sonic's stint in another reality, where he meets a superhero-themed version of the Freedom Fighters that are based on Marvel Comics' Guardians of the Galaxy.

 

* Scourge the Hedgehog is a reverse-colored version of Sonic. This is similar to The Flash villain Reverse-Flash. Instead of being blue with green eyes, Scourge is green with blue eyes. And instead of being red with a yellow symbol, Reverse-Flash is yellow with a red symbol.

 

* Super Sonic Special #08 features a parody of Sailor Moon called Sally Moon. This parody was again brought up in Super Sonic Special #12.

 

* Super Sonic Special #15 features a parody of Frank Miller's Sin City series. It stars Sonic The Hedgehog as John Hartigan and Bunnie Rabbot as Nancy Callahan.

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog

 

The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (also known as: AoStH) is an American and French animated series that was first broadcast in September 1993, and only for one season. It follows the escapades of the computer game character Sonic the Hedgehog, and his best friend Miles "Tails" Prower, as they attempt to stop the evil Doctor Ivo Robotnik and his array of vicious robots from taking over the planet Mobius. However, in typical Sonic style, Sonic always finds time to indulge in as many Chili Dogs he can get his hands on. This series is very much a slapstick type comedy – especially with the incredibly melodramatic explosions and quirky story lines – but Sonic is always portrayed as being skilled and clever, whereas Scratch and Grounder are clumsy and often serve as Robotnik's foil.

 

The show was originally offered to be broadcast on ABC's Saturday Morning line-up, but ABC reviewed the show and found lack of animation, unpopular story plots, and other things. As a result, ABC declined the deal and the show ended up only being broadcast on syndication.

 

Production

 

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was created by DIC Entertainment, which produced a total of 65 episodes for its first season, and was syndicated by Bohbot Entertainment, now BKN International (in the original run, every episode began and ended with the "Bohbot Entertainment Presents" logo).

 

The plots often loosely followed the storyline of the Sonic video games series, although when the cartoon began, the Sonic games were still quite new, and lacking much plot or character development, which was filled in by the show's writers.

 

Later DiC ceased production on this comical version to spend more time on its darker interpretation, dubbed just Sonic the Hedgehog (commonly known as SatAM by fans), a series launched on ABC's Saturday morning line-up. Check for more info : Click here Post-production

 

After the original airing, DiC created one more episode in the winter of 1996, "Sonic Christmas Blast", which has features from the other Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon such as Princess Sally Acorn in a non-speaking cameo.
